Acne
Acne is one of the many skin problems that adolescents and adults face. It is usually a confidence-killer especially when it breaks-out. Acne is usually caused by clogged pores and excess production of sebum on the skin.
To make matters worse, dirt and bacteria build-up can cause acne to become infected.
There are three major types of acne: acne vulgaris, cystic acne and comedonal acne.
- Acne Vulgaris - is the most common type of acne. It affects around 90% or acne patients. This type of acne is characterized by the presence of papules, comedones and pustules. The frequency and severity of acne lesions depend per individual.
- Cystic Acne - is considered the most severe type of acne. There are comedones, pustules, papules and cysts which characterize this type of acne. Acne cysts are caused by severe infection and inflammation of the skin. This type of acne can be painful to the individual.
- Cystic acne should be treated immediately to prevent tissues from being damaged by infection and inflammation.
- Comedonal Acne - is consists of blackheads and whiteheads, and usually without acne lesions. Comedonal acne is considered the mildest type of acne.
- Acne should be treated right away to prevent the build-up of infections. Scarring usually occurs when there is too much damage on the skin and tissues after an episode of severe acne. Usually, patients complain about the deep, crater-like scars that cystic acne leaves on their skin. This happens when infection is too severe.
Acne can be treated; however, it takes time, medication and proper approach. It is also important to understand that acne should not be left untreated for a long time and self-medication is not always the best cure.
